The new MS 400 C-M chainsaw from Stihl claims to be the world’s first chainsaw fitted with a magnesium piston as opposed to a traditional aluminium piston. This new 66.8cc model offering 4.1Nm of torque finds itself in the firm’s professional line of chainsaws.

Weighing in at 7.1kg and equipped with a 17in bar, the MS 400 C-M boasts an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 1.5kg per kilowatt. The new magnesium piston is also said to increase the engine’s maximum speed, which now revs out to 14,000rpm.

The MS 400 C-M sits in between the smaller model MS 362 C-M (59cc) and MS 462 C-M (72.2cc). In terms of percentages, the new MS 400 C-M offers 14% more power and 17% more torque in comparison to the MS 362 C-M.

Specs

As standard the MS 400 C-M is equipped with Stihl’s smart M-Tronic engine management system, controlling ignition timing and fuel metering during operation which takes external temperature and altitude factors into account.

Under the cover is the HD2 air filter with radial sealing to increase service life.

Other features of the new model include an ElastoStart pull cord helping reduce shock on on the operator while starting the saw.

The variable displacement oil pump can be adjusted based on either the operator or situation. There is an “E” position which reduces oil application by up to 50%.

The MS 400 C-M is best suited for use with either 16in, 18in or 20in bars. Prices start from €1,089 including VAT.
