This is in significant contrast to last year when you could not even walk on most land at this point. Hopefully it will prove to be of benefit in terms of low levels of take-all and other diseases.

Once stubble land is dry enough it should be ploughed to kill existing vegetation and get a frost tilth on top.

Given the amount of growth in winter crops in the mild conditions it may be important to get a small amount of nitrogen onto crops in early February if temperatures remain mild and land remains dry. Volunteer vegetation on stubbles suggests that much of the nutrients in the ground may now have been used up by growing crops. If winter barley crops get hungry they are likely to lose tillers.
