For the second week running, Birr mart ran an online sale using the MartBids platform, with buyers being able to view the stock in the morning prior to the sale. In total there were 36 different successful online buyers on the day.
Bullocks
There was a large entry of Friesian bullocks in the 350-400kg range, which was reflected in the average price of €1.88/kg. However, the top-third averaged €2.41/kg for continental type suckler-bred animals. At the top end, one 13-month-old Limousin steer weighing 382kg made €940 or €2.46/kg.

In the 400-500kg weight range, Limousin cross steers were typically making in the high €2.30s per kilo and topped out at €2.68/kg for a 13-month-old 407kg Limousin who sold for €1,090.
More traditional cross dairy types were typically averaging from €1.90-€2.05/kg, while straight dairy types were making anything from €1.50-€1.70/kg depending on quality.

Similarly, in the 500-600kg weight range for bullocks Angus and Hereford crosses were typically making €1.85-€2.00/kg, with straight dairy types making €1.62-€1.72/kg.


In the 600kg+ range Angus and Hereford cross dairy cattle were averaging €1.85-€2.00, with an extra 5-10c/kg being paid for well fleshed Angus crosses.

Heifers
In the 350-400kg weight range prices topped out at €1,000/hd for a group of three spring 2019-born Charolais cattle weighing 398kg – equivalent to €2.51/kg.

For heifers weighing 400-500kg, Hereford and Angus cross dairy types were making €1.75-€1.95 on average, with suckler-type continental crosses making between €2.20/kg and €2.40/kg.


It was predominantly Limousin cross heifers in the 500-600kg weight range, with the overall average at €1.95/kg and top third making €2.07/kg.

Cows
There was also just over 20 cows on offer. They averaged €1.55/kg, with Friesian cows making from €1.15-€1.58/kg for heavier, better fleshed types. Continental type cows were averaging around the €1.75/kg mark, though numbers were low.
