While there was no joy for Irish-trained runners in the Arc at ParisLonghcamp on Sunday, there was a big win in the Prix de l’Abbaye, where A Case Of You flew home to give Dublin trainer Ado McGuinness a brilliant first Group 1 success.

The three-year-old, ridden by Ronan Whelan, looked to be struggling to bridge the gap to runaway leader Air De Valse, but got motoring inside the final furlong and got up on the line to win the day by a short head.

It was a huge win for McGuinnes and owner Gary Devlin, who paid €25,200 to supplement the horse into the race early last week.

A Case Of You was previously owned and trained by John McConnell before he was bought by Devlin, and the son of Hot Streak is the latest step up the ladder from his ever progressive trainer.

Somewhat unusually, McGuinness trains in Dublin, in the middle of a triangle of towns of Rush, Lusk and Skerries. He was previously more well known for his jumps horses, but since 2016 he has continued to improve his flat string, with notable big race wins at the Galway Festival. He trained just six winners on the flat in Ireland in 2013 but has 38 and counting so far this term.

A Case Of You’s Group 1 win could well propel him on to another level, while in the shorter-term, the colt could be bound for the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar next month.

In the day’s main attraction, the Arc was remarkably won by a 72/1 shot in Torquator Tasso, who travelled eye-catchingly well and saw out his race best to get the better of Dermot Weld’s Tarnawa, with the St Leger winner Hurricane Lane in third.

The winner, trained by Marcel Weiss and ridden by Rene Piechulek, was a second win in the last 11 renewals of the Arc for Germany, often an underrated racing jurisdiction on the international stage.

Back at home last weekend, Galway heroes Royal Rendezvous and Saldier upheld their good form with feature race wins at Gowran Park and Tipperary respectively.

Royal Rendezvous, the Plate winner, was game in his victory over Hardline in the Grade 2 PWC Champion Chase at Gowran Park, while Saldier ran out a smooth winner of the Grade 3 Horse & Jockey Hurdle.

Both could have a say in some of the marquee jumps races, with the season set to warm up in the coming weeks.
