There was a big entry of quality Belgian Blue stock at Thursday’s commercial Belgian Blue show and sale in Gort mart.

There was a huge attendance of buyers at the sale – both ringside and online. Aaron Mc Gann from Bellharbour claimed the red rosette in a hotly contested show of BBX heifers.

McGann’s BBX heifer was a BB9725 sired 2025-born weanling weighed 440 kgs and sold for €7,400(16.82/kg).

The red rosette in the bull ring went to Mia McAllen, Ballyaneen, Gort for her spring-born BBX bull weighing 525kgs, which sold for €3,750(7.14/kg).

Second prize BBX heifer went to Mairead Griffin of Doonbeg for her BBX AI bred heifer weighing 360kgs which sold for €5,260(14.61/kg).

Second prize BBX bull went to John Hickey from Thurles for his bull weighing 370kgs which sold for €2,800 (7.57/kg).

Heifers made up to €16.82/kg and averaged €5.70 per kg, with 23 of the heifers on offer making over €3,000.

Fifty of the heifers on offer made between €2,000 and €3,000. Bulls made up to €7.58 per kg and averaged €5.79/ kg with over fifty of the bulls topping the €2,000 mark.

Next Thursday 25 September sees the Limousin spring-born show and sale of heifers and bulls.
