Elphin Mart had a special sale of weanlings during its normal sale last Monday night.

It attracted big numbers, with 250 bull weanlings moving through the ring and almost 100 weanling heifers also being sold on the night.

A combination of exporters and farmers drove the trade, with more farmer activity witnessed on Monday night than in previous sales.

Top call went to a May 2024-born Belgian Blue-cross bull weighing 610kg that sold for €5,900 (€9.67/kg).

There was a number of weanlings that sold for between €3,000 and €4,000. The top third of weanlings in the 300kg to 400kg weight bracket came in at €6.46/kg, with top-quality bulls in the 400kg to 450kg weight category coming in at €6.39/kg.

Heifers

Heifer weanlings went even higher, with top-quality heifers in the 300kg to 400kg weight bracket coming in at €6.65/kg.

Lighter heifers in the 200kg to 300kg weight bracket came in at €7.16/kg.

Bullocks in the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket were also in demand, with €5.96/kg being paid for the top third of bullocks.

The majority of good-quality weanlings sold for €6/kg and over it.

Mart manager Ciaran Lynch described the trade as electric, with some of the big feeders a lot keener than they were a month ago.
