The first of the summer outdoor country festivals goes ahead in St Conleth’s GAA Park in Newbridge on Sunday 14 June. The venture is being promoted by Kildare GAA in association with KFM Radio.
It will be a hectic weekend for Kildare fans as they will also be heading back to Tullamore on Saturday evening for the replay of the Leinster senior football quarter final against Laois after the thrilling draw last weekend.
Syl Merrins tells us they are expecting big support for the country show which has been in the planning for many months now.
It gets underway at 2pm and features a host of top names from the country scene including Michael English, Jimmy Buckley, Mike Denver, Declan Nerney, Lisa McHugh, Crystal Swing, Johnny Peters, Tara Shamrock and The Conquerors.
Tickets are priced at €20 prior to the event (€25 on the day) and children under 12 are free. CL
The seventh annual Welcome Home to Enniscrone Festival, organised by Enjoy Travel, takes place in the Diamond Coast Hotel from Sunday 14 June to Thursday 18 June
The venture attracts a large and loyal clientele, with many making the journey across the Irish Sea from the UK.
Enjoy Travel was founded over two decades ago by Gerry Flynn who hails from Ballina but who has lived for many years in Blackburn, England.
Among the artists on stage during the five-day festival are Philomena Begley, Shawn Cuddy, Johnny Brady, Dermot Hegarty, Dave Lalor, Limelight, Pat Jordan, Ally Harron and Marian Curry, Brendan Magee and Eugene Cunningham, the Bonnie Stewart duo, Joe Boyle (Donegal) and Michael Fox, as well as the Enjoy Travel Band.
Céilí and set dancing followers will be entertained by The Long Note, Rise The Dust, The Salamanca, The Full House, and the Matt Cunningham Céili bands.
The nightly sessions, conducted by Mick Mackey from Clonmel and featuring Sean Gilsenan, Pat Casey, Tommy Mulhall, Austin Nevin and friends, are an integral part of the Enjoy Travel promotions at home and overseas and these will be staged each night in the bar. Entertainer of
the Year award
Limerick lady Muriel O’Connor was the recipient of the Entertainer of the Year accolade at the recent Tipp FM Awards night in Clonmel. She is pictured here with Daniel O’Donnell who was a surprise guest on the show.
Foster & Allen in New Zealand charts
Foster & Allen are riding high in the New Zealand album charts. The Westmeath duo, who are nearing the end of a hugely successful 17-date concert tour of New Zealand, have seen their album, After All These Year – The Very Best of Foster & Allen, soar to No 3 in the charts.
It really is a superb achievement for Mick and Tony to be right up there with Irish group The Script holding down the No 1 slot, followed by Ed Sheerin at No 2. Not only that but they are also at No 12 with another album, Gold and Silver Days.
Davitts go a cruisin’
Canadian singer and songwriter Kevin Collins struck up a friendship with The Davitt Country Band from Wexford while they were all enjoying a cruise out of Florida. The Newfoundland man brought one of his songs to the attention of Joe Davitt and You Can Knock On My Door Anytime is now their latest single.
“Kevin has written some fine songs over the years and a few Irish singers have recorded some of his material,” says Joe. “We were delighted to record his song as our brand new single and it is going down very well with dancers and radio listeners.”
