The Opry le Daniel series was recorded in the city where the Foyle waters flow a few months ago and is set to entertain country music followers from now until Christmas.

The show, which is hosted by Daniel O’Donnell, is produced by Big Mountain Productions and this is the seventh year of the series.

The series got underway on 18 September with a Johnny Cash tribute show that featured Sandy Kelly, Declan Nerney and Jordan Mogey. The second show focussed on the Ryan family from Carlow, brothers Derek and Adrian and their dad, Pat. This week’s show features Lisa McHugh and the repeat goes out on Saturday night at 8.45pm.

Young country is the theme of the show that airs on 9 October at 9.30pm. It went down a treat during the recording at the Millennium Forum Theatre and the atmosphere can be sampled in style by viewers when they tune in to enjoy some of the emerging talent on the circuit.

The performers

Olivia Douglas from Ferbane is certainly enjoying a breakthrough season, which has seen her profile soar in recent months. The Offaly woman has been in constant demand for guest spots on shows around the country. Her recordings of Leaving Tipperary and Off to Lisdoonvarna have captured the friendly and easy rapport that Olivia generates with her audiences.

Caitlin Murtagh from Down has always had a preference for the traditional sounds of country music. She is no stranger to the scene and has featured on numerous shows over the last decade. She also hosts her own show on the Keep It Country channel.

Kealan Arbuckle is the youngest of the guest performers on this show. The 18-year-old completed his Leaving Cert back in June and has just commenced third-level studies in Derry.

His tribute song, When Big Tom Sang Gentle Mother, composed by Joe McShane and Margo O’Donnell, has garnered a lot of attention and was performed by Keelan at the official unveiling ceremony of the Big Tom monument in Castleblayney last Sunday week. Stuart Moyles from Mayo also features on the young country show. He hails from Ardagh near Ballina and is a first cousin of the well-known and established country singer Gerry Guthrie.

Music runs deep in the family circle and Stuart’s brothers Trevor and Jason also perform on the circuit. The video for his recording of Westport Town, created by Alan Clarke who now hosts his own shows on Galway Bay Radio, has garnered in excess of 120,000 views on YouTube.

Brandon McPhee brings a taste of Scotland to the Derry show. The young man from Castletown in the Highlands is known for his love of traditional Scottish and country music and is equally at home with either genre. He was honoured with the All-Scotland senior traditional accordion solo championship in 2014. Since then, Brandon has released a number of albums and also hosts a weekly show on the Keep It Country channel.
