The Irish Charolais Cattle Society will have a display of top-class commercial and pedigree Charolais cattle on their stand (number 113 in the livestock area) at this year’s National Ploughing Championships.

On the opening day of the championships, the winner and runner-up of this year’s ICCS suckler herd’s competition will be announced. The competition attracted a lot interest and entries over the past few months, which resulted in a number of herds being selected for on-farm visits.

The winner and runner-up will be presented with their €2,000 and €1,500 vouchers, which can be used to purchase a pedigree Charolais bull or heifer in a society sale within the next three years. Cattle from both herds will be shown on the Charolais stand.

The pedigree cattle on the stand will embrace the top prizewinners from the National Calf and Heifer Championships. This competition featured progeny from all the major Charolais sires in France, UK and Ireland, with entries from most of the top herds in the country competing for the prestigious titles.

There will also be a wonderful opportunity to win a five-star maternal Charolais heifer which will be on display. The winning ticket will be drawn on the last day of the championships

Yearbook

The Society’s Yearbook will also be launched at the Ploughing. It will have all the up-to-date information on the breed, including pictures and reports from the National Calf and Heifer championships and summer shows and sales.

The Charolais autumn sales season kicks off on Thursday 22 October with an evening, unhaltered female sale in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Heifers and cows suitable for breeding and commercial use will be on offer and there will be an inspection of all entries on the evening of the sale.

The society’s bull sales commence on 7 November in Tullamore and on 21 November in Ennis, Co Clare. The Christmas Cracker (which will feature females and males) takes place in Elphin, Co Roscommon, on Saturday 5 December.

Shows and sales for 2016 commence in Tullamore on Saturday 6 February. Next up will be the spring premier in Elphin on 19 March. Athenry is scheduled for Thursday 7 April and it’s back to Tullamore on Saturday 23 April before finishing up with the final spring show and sale on 21 May.
