Farm safety is a topic often swept under the carpet. However, after a record number of farm deaths in 2014, and farm-related accidents reaching double figures every year, businesses, organisations and farmers alike have become pro-active in trying to change these figures, aiming to highlight the importance of farm safety.

This year at the Tullamore Show, the Farm Relief Services (FRS) will be joining forces with FBD and the HSA to raise awareness of farm safety to spectators and exhibitors alike. FRS will demonstrate livestock handling, PTO safety and slurry safety.

With livestock being one of the most prominent causes of farm-related injuries, FRS will give a bull handling demonstration, highlighting the importance of bull handling facilitates on every farm. Advice and tips will be given on how to correctly move a bull from a holding pen into a crush without entering the pen. Equipment such as an adjustable sculling gate, penning system and handling gates will be used in this demonstration giving farmers the chance to see new facilities on offer being used.

A covered and uncovered PTO demonstration will also take place, showing the extreme effects of working with an uncovered PTO shaft.

Slurry safety, another major danger on farms nationwide, will be demonstrated, showcasing slatted-shed manhole covers that can facilitate agitating and emptying of slurry tanks without opening. In other areas of the national livestock show, Macra na Feirme will be hosting the FBD Farmskills final. This competition tests proficiency in several aspects of farm skills, from tractor skills to fencing.

The main aim of the competition is to help young farmers develop various farm skills while also creating a greater awareness of farm safety. Four Macra teams from different corners of the country will compete to win the title on the day.

With a total of 163 entries, Charolais has the biggest pedigree beef livestock number entered for this year’s AIB National Livestock Show. All 16 classes are well supported by Charolais breeders from as far away as Donegal to Kerry. Calf classes are particularly well supported with progeny from 42 different sires, giving breeders an opportunity to see the offspring from the various bulls. Many of these bulls will be destined for the Christmas cracker sale in December, so prospective purchasers have an opportunity to see the bulls at an early stage.

In the judging ring is Andrew Hornall, from the Falleninch Charolais herd situated in the shadow of Stirling Castle and within the boundaries of the city of Stirling in Scotland. Andrew is the vice-chair of the British Charolais Society and has been on numerous visits to Ireland. He purchased his stock bull Dereskit Fernando (bred by Basil Bothwell) at the 2011 Christmas cracker show and sale where he was overall Charolais champion. Dereskit Fernando took the interbreed championship at the Stirling show in 2013 for the Falleninch Herd and his first calf, Falleninch Isabella, won the junior championship at the Stars of the Future competition in November 2013.

Meanwhile, the National Calf and Heifer Charolais Championships are scheduled for Tullamore mart on Sunday 13 September. Entries close on 13 August and entry forms can be downloaded from www.charolais.ie
