A major milestone has been reached for Louth-based wellness brand Spoonful Botanical after receiving approval from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) to carry a joint support claim on its label – a significant achievement for the growing Irish health brand.
Founded by Inter County GAA star Conor Grimes and wife Jayne Grimes, Spoonful Botanical is an all-natural product designed to support bone, joint and cartilage health. The product is now stocked in hundreds of health stores and pharmacies nationwide and exported internationally, with demand continuing to grow as more people seek natural support for joint health.
Scientific recognition
While Spoonful Botanical had been receiving strong testimonials from customers across Ireland and Europe for years, the founders faced a challenge familiar to many natural health companies: strict regulations around health claims meant
they could not publicly discuss the benefits customers were experiencing.
“We knew from the feedback we were getting that Spoonful Botanical was working for thousands of people,” explains Conor. “But as a small health food business, we were unable to promote or talk about those benefits due to regulations around health products. We had to rely on our customers spreading the word.”
Determined to understand the science behind their product, the team began working with scientific laboratories including ALS Global and Fitz Scientific to conduct detailed testing and research.
The results revealed that the product’s naturally high vitamin C content, combined with its unique blend of ingredients, supports normal collagen formation, bone health and cartilage health.
Following several years of testing and regulatory processes, Spoonful Botanical was officially approved to carry a joint support claim – a major breakthrough for the company.
“This approval is a huge turning point for us,” says Conor. “It allows us to finally communicate the science behind the product and explain why so many people have been experiencing positive results.”
Asian inspiration
The inspiration for Spoonful Botanical began thousands of miles from Ireland during travels through south Asia in 2017. Conor and Jayne observed how locals regularly used natural root ingredients such as turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper in their daily diets to support overall wellbeing.
At the time, Conor’s grandmother was suffering from severe joint pain. Inspired by what they had seen abroad, the couple returned to Ireland with the raw ingredients and began experimenting in their kitchen.
“We prepared and fermented the ingredients in the same way we had seen while travelling,” Conor explains. “My grandmother started taking a spoonful each day, and within a number of weeks she noticed real improvements in everyday activities that had become difficult for her.”
Word quickly spread, and what
began as a homemade remedy for family soon grew into a product used by thousands of people across Ireland.

A unique process
Spoonful Botanical is an innovative blend of 14 traditional herbs, spices and fermented fruits, including turmeric, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon and cayenne.
What makes the product stand apart is the way it is produced. Instead of using pre-processed powders, the company sources whole raw roots, which are dehydrated and carefully ground in-house to guarantee ingredient quality.
The ingredients are then combined with golden jumbo raisins and left to ferment for 21 days – a process that enhances the availability of nutrients while allowing beneficial bacteria to develop.
“The fermentation stage is fundamental to the product,” says Jayne. “It increases the availability of the nutrients and makes it a very simple way to incorporate these traditional ingredients into your daily routine.”
Customers simply take one heaped teaspoon per day, either straight from the jar or mixed into foods such as porridge or yoghurt.
Building a brand
As demand grew, the founders received support from Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia and their Local Enterprise Office. Media appearances, including a feature on Nationwide on RTÉ, helped introduce the product to a wider audience.
The company has since expanded its production facility in Tullyallen, Co Louth, built a strong e-commerce platform and grown its retail footprint.
Today Spoonful Botanical is stocked in hundreds of health food stores and pharmacies, with customers across Ireland, the UK and Europe incorporating the product into their daily routines.
For Conor and Jayne, what began as a personal project to help a family member has grown into a thriving Irish wellness brand.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” says Conor. “From helping my grandmother to now hearing from customers all over the country about how the product is helping them – that’s what makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
With regulatory approval secured and demand continuing to grow, the future looks bright for Spoonful Botanical as the company continues to expand its reach both at home and international.
