The weather gods failed to oblige at the Kingdom County Fair, held at Tralee’s former racecourse, where Liam O’Meara scored a double in both the Red Mills Munster Grand Prix, with Mr Coolcaum and FBD speed class with Realt Na Carraig.

“The weather was disappointing but we’re delighted to get Grand Prix show jumping back in Tralee and thanks to all our sponsors, including Ulster Bank who put up €2,000 for the big class,” said show committee member Donie Geaney, who competed Mr Medicott’s dam, Slieve Luachra, at the show.

On the showing front, sodden results books and entries on the day, which puts unfair pressure on secretaries, made gathering results a challenge. Smiling through the rain were Rebecca Monahan whose Lancelot filly, Notalot was Mary O’Halloran and Paddy Downes’ young horse champion ahead of the other three-year-old winner, John Crowley’s Naughty Lux (Lux Z).

Jane Scully’s homebred Limbo Scarlet won the broodmare title, while another Ghareeb mare – Suzanne O’Brien’s Razzle Dazzle Girl – was the champion ridden horse. This section, judged by John Kennedy and Kevin McGuinness, had strong entries and Lyndsey O’Brien completed a double for the Adare family when Mr Shakespeare (Olympic Lux) stood reserve.

Nicholas Byrne, Patricia Hoey and Faith Ponsonby’s pony champions included Alix Cunneen’s show hunter find, Chantilly Anchorman. Another new combination of Anton Dancing Romance and Deirdre Burchill won the show pony championship, while Tim Hurley also had a double when the homebred Blennerville Orlando (Captain Carnute) and Daisy won the intermediate and novice working hunter titles with Casey O’Connor and Niamh Murphy.
