Lorraine Maher’s show jumper Derrylackey Heartbreaker boosted the one-day figures at Cavan last week, when he changed hands for an impressive €20,000.

Recording the best price seen at the venue this year, the seven-year-old son of Eurocommerce Pittsburgh contributed to a steady day’s trade, which produced an increased average of €2,685 (€2,231). In contrast the clearance rate dipped to 64% (77%), and this was largely due to the muted demand for the younger stock.

Overall, the single session was lively enough, and reflecting Cavan’s Stuart Clarke commented, “It’s always great to see a good price, and I’m equally pleased to see the improvement in trade which takes a step forward at every sale.” While the recent one-day dispersals have worked well in recent months, Clarke revealed that he was forced to turn down entries for last week’s sale and anticipates that the remaining fixtures will most likely be two-day fixtures.

Derrylackey Heartbreaker looked every inch a sale-topper when showcasing under Lisa Murphy, and as a result produced a lively tussle for ownership.

Bids bounced rapidly up the scale before a determined Tom Hutchinson finally out stayed Kilkenny’s Carol Gee. Disclosing that he had bought the gelding for his daughter to show jump, Co Laois based Hutchinson remarked, “Whether you were looking for a jumper or an eventer, there was not a lot to fault him on.”

Bred in Mullinavat, Co Kilkenny, Maher’s home-bred gelding is one of three registered foals out of the Flagmount King-sired mare Bailey. In his short career under SJI rules, he had clocked up 30 SJI points in classes up to 1.20cms level and boasts a remarkably clean record.

Older horses

Five horses realised between €5,000 - €6,000 including Ann Gannon’s home-bred AHG Whiterock Cruise R by Mermus R (dam by Cruising). Athlone’s Jim Derwin parted with €6,000 for this smart individual and later paid €5,800 for Stephen Fahy’s nine-year-old show jumper Mr Cool by Castlelawn Galloway. Selling for the same figure and recording the best five-year-old return was Gary Cluston’s Right As Rain (no recorded breeding). A further 10 of the older stock sold for between €4,000 - €5,000.

Ponies

A notable feature of the sale was the significant entry of ponies, and with 95 lots originally catalogued, 54 changed hands. Standing out was the day’s next best return which, at €6,800 fell to Fairview Stud’s Ballinamurra Josh.

Well ridden by Christopher Slattery, the talented grey 148cms gelding looked well bought by Co.Down’s show jumping family headed by Christine and Nigel Browne.

A strong demand from Scandinavia saw several ponies sell well, among which were three knocked down to Swedish buyer Johann Wetterskog. Citing a growing call for Irish-bred ponies, Wetterskog paid €4,500 apiece for Pat Drea’s grade A 128cms jumping pony Travis, the similarly sized six-year-old OB Bouncer and Adrian Williams’ 138cms show jumper Too Many Colours. Williams also did well when his Parc Echo realised the same amount (€4,500) when secured by Cavan-based John McVey.

In comparison to the older stock, demand for the younger stock was limited. Heading the four-year-olds at €4,500 was a daughter of OBOS Quality (dam by Chair Lift) while a son of Sir Shutterfly (dam by Castana) sold the best of the two, three-year-olds at €3,000.
