Galway’s Cathal Daniels notched up an impressive win in the feature CCI4*-S class at last weekend’s Portugal Winter Tour in Barroca d’Alva.
The Portugal Winter Tour is a chance for international athletes to achieve the qualification standard needed for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Daniels however, through the 2018 World Equestrian Games silver medal winning Irish team, had already secured a place at the Games.
Daniels led from start to finish with a dressage score of 29.7 aboard the Sarah Hughes-owned gelding Barrichello. The pair then added nothing to their score in the jumping phases.

Daniels also took sixth place with My Lucky Day on a score of 40.1.
In the CCSI3*-S class, Daniels came close to triumph and finished as runner-up on a score of 35.5 with the Irish Sport Horse Shannondale Mari by Shannondale Sarco St Ghyvan (BEWB) out of Shannondale Maria (ISH) by Lux Z (HANN), bred by Co Clare’s Martin Walsh.
