Teagasc conference

A reminder that the Teagasc National Equine Conference gets under way at Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny today (Thursday).

Rosemary Skine service

Noted horsewoman Rosemary Skine (nee Barratt) passed away recently. She served as honorary secretary of the Island Foxhounds for nearly 50 years. A memorial service will be held in St Brigid’s Church, Kilrush, tomorrow (Friday, 25 November), at 2pm.

A great judge of horses and deeply involved in breeding, she whipped in to her late father when he was master and huntsman of the Coolattin Foxhounds, later known as the Shillelagh & District of which she became master. Rosemary is survived by her son David, daughter-in-law Liz and daughter Susan, also by her brother John Barratt, nieces, nephews and grandchildren Tara, Christopher and Nicholas.

Howley flying

Richard Howley (24) from Dooneen, Enniscrone, Co Sligo, enjoyed an incredible winning streak in Mijas, Spain, on the Costa de Sol tour. Over the tour’s duration, Howley won 10 classes and also racked up many placings. His greatest triumph came with his win in the world-ranking speed class on Chinook. The talented young rider competed six horses in Mijas and had to settle for the runner-up slot in the €24,000 Grand Prix on the final day, where he just lost out to Swiss ace Pius Schwizer by 0.07 of a second.

Cavan Sale

Cavan has a strong selection of horses and ponies on sale today (Thursday,) with Friday hosting a Young Stock Sport Horse Sale, starting at 10am, with 150 lots of foals, yearlings and broodmares from Corland, Cornet Obolensky, OBOS Quality, Kannan, Luidam, London and Comme Il Faut among others. That will be followed at 4.30pm on Friday with the National Registered Irish Draught Sale, featuring 60 lots of foals, yearlings, broodmares and older horses.
