A SON of the sport horse sire Diamond Chow capped a busy day’s trading at Cavan last week, when he headed the returns at €10,200.
The traditionally-bred six-year-old was clearly the pick of a mixed catalogue, which delivered a strong clearance of 75% (64% in 2016) together with an average of €2,909 (2,685).
The gelding’s sale was a lucky one for Carrickmacross vendor Keith Wilson, who had sourced him locally about three months ago. Barely broken on purchase, but riding well at the sale, the horse put on a head-turning display. Several buyers were in at the sharp end for this smart individual, who was finally secured by Athlone dealer Jim Derwin.
Another to catch the eye was Vincent Meaney’s well-related show jumping mare, Cotton Kandy, by Peter Pan.
Changing hands for €10,000 the Lucy Buchanan-bred mare had been lightly campaigned to win six SJI points, and is a half-sister sister to the young show jumper Mermus Kandy. Austrian customer and show jumper Andreas Hofer signed the docket for this attractive mare, and will compete her himself.
Overall the quality of the stock was varied, but buyers were prepared to pull out for the better individuals.
Among them, Breda Mulcahy’s seven-year-old event horse Cian’s Boy (by Cavalier Jump For Joy) looked well-bought by Yorkshire dealer Graham Sugden for €7,600, while Darragh Ryan’s useful show jumper Cara Clem was knocked down to Ronan McLoughlan for €6,300.
The latter had competed on the Millstreet Spring Tour earlier this year, and is a half-brother to the approved stallion and 1.50m grand prix show jumper Cara Touche.
While most of the general riding horses found new homes, demand was at its strongest for the older competition stock.
GOOD SELECTION
The day opened with a good selection of ponies, and selling very well to head the group at €8,400 was Albert O’Brien’s Sundance 111.
Co Down resident Richard Lyttle accounted for this talented pony, who has a career total of 33 SJI points.
