Course designer Paul Duffy set the challenge for the 16 finalists in the young rider divisions. In the 1.35/1.40m only three clear rounds were delivered the first time out to progress to the second round.

First to go, Nicholas Connors delivered the only double clear of the class with Abordable du Talus in 38.98, to take this championship. Connors, who is a nephew of Francis Connors, is a veterinary student at UCD and has just completed his first-year exams.

Kilkenny rider Anna Carway proved out of luck when she faulted at the both parts of the double with Claricella in 38.38, for eventual third. Last in, Stephen Murphy and Chantelle faulted at the water tray fence and crossed the line in 39.38 to take the runner-up slot.

Finnerty claims 1.25/1.30M

On Saturday evening, Wicklow rider Mark Finnerty won the 1.25-1.30m championship. He lodged a double clear with All Action in 32.63 seconds. Ciaran Nallon has had a great few weeks on the international circuit and he topped it off when taking the runner-up spot. Riding Bally Fair Deal, he was close on the winner’s heels when clear in 33.84. Cian Harrison and Mr Big Cash also kept the poles in place in 34.37 for third.

Killian Ryan and Marlow Eli won the 1.10-1.15m division. Ryan was last into the arena and galloped home in an impressive 40.17 second. A series of good results saw Ryan take home the leading young rider title of the show. Tadhg Mulligan and Mohill Spring jumped clear in a time of 41.52 to finish second and Aidan Kavanagh and Graffique came third.

Matt Garrigan won the young rider bursary. Team manager Rodrigo Pessoa picked Garrigan as the winner out of the four riders (Nano Healy, Nicholas Connors, Matt Garrigan, Mark Finnerty), who were chosen to contest the class.

Champions

Winner of the individual children on horses championship was Niamh McEvoy riding Charlton Chloe.

First to go in the jump-off, she lodged a clear in 33.26.

This 11-year-old mare is by HSS BR Charlton and out of the Cloverhill-sired dam Admiran Clio.

Niamh also competes in the pony divisions and clocked up a series of results in the pony arena, including two wins in the qualifiers with Fireman in the 148cm division.

Winners of the children on horses team was the Johnny O’Connell team of Jemima Heffron (Quinten), Aoife Drea (Sandballin), Seamus Hennessy (Ballynoe Carnival Girl) and Isobel Hughes Kennedy (ESI Carvalho).

Amateurs

Taking place after the Puissance on Saturday, amateur riders once again jumped under floodlights in the main arena. Despite a hectic timetable, combinations were well up to the challenge. Aideen Kirby was fastest of the four double clears in 36.46, aboard Derg Masterpiece.
