Southern Machinery is based in Donore Caragh, Naas, Co Kildare, directly opposite the Mondello Park International Racing Circuit. Its premises are only 15 minutes from junction 10 on the M7.
“We employ six people in total. We recently moved premises due to a dramatic increase in storage and the need for more workshops due to a major increase in the volume of orders coming in,” says Philip Tutty, co-owner of Southern Machinery, along with his brother Kenneth.

“The zero-turn Hustler product is where the huge growth has been in our company. This type of lawnmower is heavily built and extremely durable. It has a different concept of steering compared with conventional lawnmowers. It is controlled using two steering levers as opposed to a conventional steering wheel. The levers can control the speed and direction of the wheels. This is what gives you the zero-turn manoeuvre mobility. Zero-turn means you’re spending less time mowing your lawn when compared with conventional ride-on mowers,” explains Philip.
Within Hustler there are different models that cater for different lawn sizes. And within the zero-turn range there are 15 different models. For example, for a 10-acre to 15-acre garden you would use a larger Hustler lawnmower.
The zero-turn mowers are priced between €4,000 and €20,000, including Hustler’s industry leading warranty of four years. This is what makes this product different as most other manufacturers have a two-year guarantee. Hustler prides itself in the quality of its products.
The company is engineering focused and aimed at building mowers for its customers. Going by the four-year warranty, it is no surprise that Hustler products are built to last.

“We have grown from a small business, with little presence in the market to having a very large presence. Sales have dramatically increased and continue to increase to this day. As a family-run company we have become one of Hustler’s largest distributors in Europe. We supply throughout Ireland and Britain. The Hustler brand was unheard of prior to 2005. It has grown since we decided to incorporate it into our company. We will continue to thrive this year and continue to grow as a company, promoting Hustler as one of the main groundcare suppliers in the country,” says Philip.
