Cork father and son team Sean and Conor Ryan are just a fortnight milking in their new parlour at Kildarra, Bandon, and are pleased with how it is settling in.

“Everything is working OK,” Sean told me. “The cows are getting used to it.” The parlour – just metres from the old one – is fitted with a 12-unit Dairypower SCR milking machine. There’s enough standing to expand to 16 units. The machine includes swing-over arms and indicators, Sean said. Pulsation on these SCR machines is controlled by milk flow. The new machine replaces an eight-unit one.

The roofed area measures approximately 56ft by 60ft – it includes a new calf shed. Concrete work was carried out by Donal O’Donovan and steelwork by OB Sheds. A new Dairi Kool milk tank was installed by Charleville Refrigeration.
