This weekend stands as the first big pedigree sales weekend of the year in Ireland. While a number of smaller sales have taken place, this weekend sees the first of the breed societies' premier sales.

Simmental spring sale

Kicking off on Saturday morning, the Irish Simmental Cattle Society holds its premier spring sale in Roscommon. A total of 72 bulls and 21 females will take to the sales ring, hoping to continue the success of last year’s sale which saw averages rise by over €500 for bulls. The show for the Simmentals starts at 8.30am, followed by the sale at noon.
Midland and Western sale
Also taking place on Saturday is the second of the 2018 bull sales of the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society in Carrick-on-Shannon. This sale sees Angus, Hereford, Limousin and Charolais animals forward, with a total of 82 catalogued. The Angus breed makes up the majority of these, accounting for 46 animals. Show starts at 10am with the sale following at noon.
Limousin premier show
Finally, the Irish Limousin Cattle Society will host its rescheduled premier show and sale this Sunday and Monday. Originally scheduled to take place last weekend, the event was postponed for a week due to Storm Emma. The sale, being held in Roscrea Mart, features 106 catalogued animals, with last year’s sale topping at €10,800.
