Roscommon was the venue for the final spring Irish Limousin Society show and sale, which saw 63% of bulls selling for an average price of €2,120. The top price of €4,300 went to Baileys Hark, the reserve senior male champion bred by Tom Bailey, Batterstown, Co Meath.

Hark is an eye-catching son of the 2007 Carlisle champion Queenshead Altea, out of the Redpaths Pelican daughter, Redpaths Unity. He has a five-star terminal index of €134 and a replacement index of €155 and was bought by an undisclosed purchaser.

The next highest price of €3,400 went to the first prize winner Shannon Heineken, bred by Sarah McElligott, Asdee, Listowel, Co Kerry.

Born in August 2012, Heineken is a Fieldson Alfy son, with back-breeding to Mas Du Clo and Haricot. He has five stars for terminal index, carcase weight and carcase conformation. The buyer was John Ryan, Tuam, Co Galway.

At €3,200 was the second prize winner, Groe Inka, exhibited by Pat Kenny, Mullaghmore, Ballinasloe, Co Galway. Born February 2013, he is a son of Towthorpe Dubai and out of the dam, Newtown Dora. He has a muscle score of 126 and a skeletal score of 119. The buyer was undisclosed.

In the ring, the judge Padraig Cotter of the Lissalohorig herd, Moulnagirra, Leap, Co Cork, awarded the senior male championship to Ryehill Hero, a Sympa son, bred by Michael Fox, Athenry, Co Galway.

At 17-months-old, he is out of a homebred Rocky dam, Ryehill Flower, and has a terminal index of €142 and a replacement index of €132. The purchaser at €2,750 was Martin Flaherty, Kinvara, Co Galway.

  • €2,500 for the junior male champion Clooncara Limousins Indiana Jo, exhibited by David Cogan, Ballyglass, Kilmovee, Co Mayo. His sire stack includes Milbrook Dartangan Et, Litron, Jeu and Wilodge Vantastic. Born in March 2013, he has a muscle score of 113 and a skeletal score of 116. The buyer was undisclosed.
  • €2,450 for Thomstown Harry, bred by John Finan, Clooncagh, Castlerea, Co Roscommon. By Sympa, he was purchased by suckler farmer Martin Conneely, Williamstown, Co Galway.
  • €2,450 for Cross Iceman, exhibited by Thomas Feehan, Kilmeena, Westport, Co Mayo. A son of Grahams Apache, he was bought by Edward Dowd, Castlegregory, Co Kerry, to run with his suckler herd.
  • €2,450 for Coolrain Hendrix, exhibited by Gearoid and Padraic Kennedy, Coolrain, Portlaoise, Co Laois. By Ballyfin Engine, he was purchased by Maurice Brady, Cootehill, Co Cavan.
  • €2,400 for the Haltcliffe Dancer son, Drominanou Ian, bred by Mark Clune, Drominanov, Feakle, Co Clare. The buyer was Paul Maher, Clonaheen, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.
  • €2,300 for Doon West Hero, exhibited by Michael Phillips, Doon West, Gurteen, Co Sligo. The buyer was pedigree breeder Bernard Donlon, Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, Co Galway.
  • €2,200 for Shannon Handyman, exhibited by Sarah McElligott, Asdee, Listowel, Co Kerry. By Vison, he was bought by Patrick Farrington, Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare.
  • €2,200 for Bockagh Hill Herman, exhibited by James Towey, Bockagh, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon. By Milbrook Dartangan, he was bought by Robert L’Estrange, Killucan, Co Westmeath.
  • €2,200 for the reserve junior male champion Gerrygullinane Ike, a Procters Cavalier son, bred by Gerry Walsh, Ballina, Co Mayo. The buyer was Adrian Reynolds, Weekfield, Co Roscommon.
  • €2,200 for Derrygullinane Iverk, exhibited by John Joseph Walsh, Knockmore, Ballina, Co Mayo. The buyer was Joe Lyons, Swinford, Co Mayo.
  • Females

    In the small entry of heifers, the female champion Crocan Holly was bred by Henry Barrett, Corclough West, Belmullet, Co Mayo. Born January 2012, this Casimir daughter sold in-calf, by Cloughhead Umpire, to Patrick McKeown for his Currane herd in Castlebar, Co Mayo, for €2,550. The reserve champion, Gorvagh Hanna 2, a Haltcliffe Dancer daughter, exhibited by Vincent Flynn, Breandrum, Gorvagh, Co Leitrim, failed to meet her reserve price and was unsold.

    Other female prices included €1,850 to Gerard Greenan, Castleshane, Co Monaghan, for a July 2012-born Soprano-Mn daughter, bought by Mervyn Kinnear, Virginia, Co Cavan, and €1,775 for a 13-month-old Fieldson Alfy daughter, purchased by Michael Shally, Dunmore, Co Galway, for his Flaskagh herd and bred by Gerry Walsh, Ballina.

    Tullamore show

    Meanwhile, the National Limousin Championships will take place at Tullamore Show on Sunday, 10 August. Two new commercial calf classes have been added to this year’s schedule which carry a total prize fund of €2,000. These include the best commercial Limousin bull calf weighing less than 400kg and the best commercial Limousin heifer calf weighing less than 360kg.
