The Derg Flock Dutch Spotted dispersal was always going to be a sale of great magnitude, featuring a guest consignment from the Craigdoo Flock which shattered records left, right and centre on Saturday 15 November at Ballymena Livestock Mart.

Held through Harrison and Hetherington, the sale produced a new female record for a Dutch Spotted sheep.

Smashing the record and selling for the highest price of 25,000gns (€29,754) was Craigdoo Firefly.

The acclaimed overall Dutch Spotted champion from Balmoral in 2024, this Carlaustan Extrovert-bred ewe sold carrying twins to Derg Hatrick. Securing her at that money was Messrs Jones from Cardiff in Wales.

Trade was absolutely scorching right throughout the sale, as Derg Homegirl, Diamond Gloria and Derg I’m The One retailed at 10,000gns (€11,901) each, with two finding homes in Antrim and one destined for North Yorkshire.

Buyers came from all over Ireland and the UK, as 96 head of sheep averaged £2,544 (€2,883).

Commenting after the sale, breeder Allen Short said: “It’s a day we will never forget, the work that went into getting everything right was insane but so worth it. A massive thank you to everyone who helped us out.”
