Irish eventing rider Jonty Evans and the Irish Sport Horse Cooley Rorkes Drift won Sunday’s CIC3* competition at Belton Horse Trials in the UK.

The pair held the lead after dressage with an excellent score of 28.8 penalties and remained on that score after a perfect clear show jumping round.

The final cross country phase saw Evans and the 12-year-old gelding also jump clear adding just 3.6 time penalties to finish on a total of 32.40 ahead of British runner-up Piggy French with Vanir Kamira.

There was also Irish success in Section N of the CIC3* at Belton with Austin O’Connor taking the runner-up spot with The Irish Sport Horse Lucky Contender.

Brilliant Beezie

America’s Beezie Madden was crowned the Longines FEI World Cup Champion at the 2018 finals in Paris on Sunday.

Riding the 11-year-old stallion Breitling LS, Madden led the competition from day one and finished with just four penalties after three days of jumping.

First time world cup finalist Devin Ryan, also from America, finished second with Eddie Blue, while Sweden’s Henrick von Eckermann (Tovek Mary Lou) took the final place on the podium.

French victory for Moran

Limerick pony rider Robyn Moran won the 1.25m Pony Grand Prix at Fontainebleau in France on Sunday with the Annette Fitzgerald-owned Moores Pride (ISH).

Moran produced the only double clear round of the competition which attracted 29 starters. Meanwhile, Katie Power and Knockroe Little Mike (ISH)were second in Sunday’s 1.30m Pony Grand Prix. They finished just 0.17 of a second behind German Lea-Sophie Gut with Salvador after a five-way jump-off.
