Shamrock Men’s Shed in Adamstown, Co Wexford, began in February 2016. Founder Mogue Curtis, now the chair, decided to start up the shed after a conversation with his neighbour, John Evoy, the man who originally brought the idea of Men’s Sheds to Ireland from Australia.

The shed, located just outside Adamstown, now boasts 20 members and has gone from strength-to-strength since its inception nearly two years ago, explains shed secretary John Walshe.

“We have members from all walks of life who love coming each week. The youngest member we have is in his 40s, and the oldest member we have is 86. Funnily enough, the most active member we have is the 86-year-old. He would put a lot of young guys to shame. He does everything.”

Members of Shamrock Men’s Shed are very involved in the community and always help out when needed in the locality. Like in most Men’s Sheds, their main activity is woodworking. Members build bird boxes, nesting boxes and several other items that are sold at a small profit, which goes towards the running of the shed.

John says people do not necessarily need to exert themselves in the shed, as it is a social occasion with a very relaxed atmosphere: “You don’t have to come to the shed to work. You can come, enjoy yourself, have a cup of tea and a chat. We meet on Mondays, and every Thursday night we go bowling in Wexford Town. The lads love it.”

The shed’s aim in the coming year is to get more people in and open two nights per week. Members also have a lot of projects in mind, which they would like to get off the ground in the near future, and are very interested in growing and developing Shamrock Men’s Shed.

Shamrock Men’s Shed is located at Tomgarrow, Adamstown, Co Wexford, and opens every Monday from 1pm to 4.30pm.
