The second online sale of bulls at Carlisle took place over the weekend, with a timed auction allowing bidders to bid over three days.

The Limousin sale held in the same fashion the previous week saw a top of £15,000, but this week’s multi-breed had to settle for a £10,000 top.

Securing the top price was the Charolais bull Solwayfirth Oneal from Ian and Dorothy Goldie, Drumfriesshire. This November 2018-born bull is the first son to be sold from the 11,500gns Glenericht Majestic, while the dam is a daughter of Perth supreme champion Blackford Samson. Ranked in the top 10% on self-replacing index, he was the pick of John Wight and sons, Biggar, Lanarkshire.

Securing the second top Charolais price was Mornity Pedro, which secured a bid of £9,000. Bred and exhibited by Jack Nicoll Farms, he is a son of the well-known Westcarse Houdini and goes back to Fallenich Hamzoraj on the dam side. Ranking very highly on a number of traits, Pedro now finds a home in Drumfriesshire with Tom Story.

Drumfriesshire was a popular area for the sale, with breeder Hamish Goldie next in line selling his October 2018-born Goldies Orchard for £7,400. This son of the 10,500gns Tweeddale Matador is out of a homebred dam by the 15,000gns Gretnahouse Herman. Carrying the highest terminal and self-replacement indexes in the catalogue, he was secured by Ouston Farms.

Overall, 19 Charolais sold to average £5,021, with eight selling for £5,000 or more.

The Angus breed was next in line for the top end prices, with Tonley Juno Eric U552 selling for £8,000. Bred by well-known breeder Neil Wattie, Juno Eric is a son of former stock bull Blelack Evor and out of the homebred Tonley Julie Erica. Securing the top priced Angus was Messrs Weir.

Just behind this at £7,000 was Gretnahouse Florian U070. This stylish young bull is sired by previous Stirling champion and 18,000gns high-seller Haymount Precursor while the dam is out of the well-known Fleur line. Aberdeenshire-based Messrs Gardiner was the highest bidder here.

Overall, 18 Angus bulls sold for an average of just shy of £4,000.
