Minister of Agriculture Michael Creed has confirmed that 18% of processed applicants were deemed ineligible for payment under the Flood Damage Relief Measure.

Responding to a parliamentary question from Fianna Fáil TD Charlie McConalogue, Minister Creed stated his department had received a total of 315 applications for flood compensation.

Flood relief was put in place for farmers in Donegal when they suffered severe crop losses and land damage, after extreme and unseasonal flooding in the Inishowen area of the county during August 2017.

To date, the Department has processed 292 applications and issued payment totalling €573,542 to 238 eligible applicants.

Some 54 applicants were deemed ineligible because they did not meet the required criteria which included:

  • Loss of livestock.
  • Loss of/damage to conserved hay or silage.
  • Clean-up of damaged agricultural lands.
  • Repairs to damaged fencing.
  • The minister confirmed that his department was currently working on the remaining 22 applications and expected to have them processed within the coming weeks.

Funding for the flood relief was provided under the EU emergency de minimis fund, which applies a €15,000 payment limit to each application.
