Tullamore Show 2019 has been hailed as yet another massive success, with one breeder describing the event as ‘unforgettable’. Thankfully, the rain held off and the judges throughout the different rings praised the exhibitors for the quality of stock put before them.

The show really has become the pinnacle of the year, with international guests in awe of how the show gets 2,500 of the best animals in the country to the Blueball site for a one-day event.

While all were happy that the weather played ball, some exhibitors left happier than others, having claimed a top placing in one of their entered classes.

This happiness was expressed even more so on the faces of those exhibitors who were recipients of the coveted gold and silver medals for securing a championship in their respective breed.

On pages 40 and 41 we go through each of these champions in the beef and dairy sections.

While deserved credit goes to all breeders for putting on a show of cattle of such high standard, particular credit needs to go to the Behan family in Ballyfin, Co Laois.

Their effort of bringing 22 cattle to the national livestock show resulted in nine first places, but even more impressive, took all the four major placings in the Simmental section.

The duo claimed both male champion and reserve, female champion and reserve, before being tapped out as overall champion and reserve.

Achievements like this don’t happen very often, particularly considering the Simmental breed saw an entry of over 130 animals. This is the fourth year in a row that Garrett and Lyndsey Behan have taken the overall championship at the show, increasing to eight times in the last 10 years. The duo described this Tullamore national livestock show as “unforgettable”.

Tasked with judging this year’s national Simmental show in Tullamore was well-known Scottish breeder Anne McPherson, who runs the Blackford herd outside Inverness.

She found her junior heifer champion, female champion and supreme champion in the form of Clonagh Jubilant Fabulous. This 20-month-old heifer is a daughter of the herd’s former stock bull Kilbride Farm Dragoon and is out of the homebred Clonagh Delightful Fabulous.

Following Jubilant to take the reserve female and reserve overall titles was well-known show cow Clonagh Darling Eyes, the current Simmental miss world.

This seven-year-old cow was pipped to the post by a younger Clonagh model in her bid to achieve a third consecutive overall championship at the show, a feat only achieved by her father Banwy T-Rex.

Two of these animals made up the five which were paraded in front of McPearson for the senior female championship, extraordinarily all Behan entries.

In the junior cow class, Darling Eyes daughter Clonagh Hazel Eyes emerged victorious. Clonagh Java Klassik girl came out on top of the intermediate heifer class, another daughter of the aforementioned Kilbride Farm Dragoon.

Last but not least was the powerful Clonagh Jenny Fabulous, which took the senior heifer class and was awarded the Jenna Stone memorial trophy, presented in memory of Lyndsey’s late sister.

Jenny Fabulous is a daughter of former Irish and UK national champion Clonagh World Class and is out of a Banwy T-Rex daughter, Clonagh Enchanted Fabulous.

The males proved equally as rewarding for the Clonagh team, with the overall male championship going to the herd’s new herd sire Manor Park Hansome. This 22,000gns purchase is a son of Slievenagh Extra Special and is out of Blackford Worzel daughter Manor Park Daydream.

Taking the reserve male championship and national junior bull championship was the May 2018-born bull Clonagh Kaboom Kid. This one is again a Kilbride Farm Dragoon-bred bull, with the dam a full sister to Clonagh Darling Eyes.

Closing out the herd’s championship success, the yearling bull Clonagh Kung Fu Fab took the reserve junior championship. This September 2018-born bull is sired by Kilbride Farm Dragoon, with the dam Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous, making him a genetic full brother to this year’s overall champion.

Taking the overall junior bull championship was William O’Halloran with Bearna-dhearg Kawaskai ET. This October 2018-born bull is a son of Anatrim Bodybuilder and out of Ballyduff Best. This young bull is a full brother to the NCBC AI bull Bearna-dhearg Honda 50.

Their two heifer calves, Lissadell Karoline and Lissadell Kirstie, were born as a result of embryo transfer from the mating of Hillcrest Champion and Tawly Gretta.

The dam of these autumn 2018-born calves needs no introduction, having won numerous championships as a heifer, including the overall Simmental title at Balmoral Show.
