Ornua Dairy Stockjudging final

Macra completed its first ever online Ornua dairy stockjudging final, which saw 39 members compete in the senior and U23 categories. Competitors completed an academic test online, as well as judging a series of photos of six cows, followed by six heifers.

Written reasons were submitted for the cows, with judges on hand to score. While the presiding officers were totting up the scores, the competitors were joined by master judge Ricky Barrett as the results were livestreamed over the Macra na Feirme Facebook page.

Thank you to all our organisers, sponsors, presiding officers, judges and IHFA breeders for making this competition a success.

Congratulations to the winners on the night:

  • Senior winner: Diarmaid O Connell, Donoughmore Macra, Muskerry.
  • Runner up: Fabian Jacob, North Kilkenny Macra, Kilkenny.
  • U23 winner: Patrick Horgan, Moynalty Macra, Meath
  • Runner up: Fiona Wilshaw, Killarney Macra, Kerry.
  • 20x20

Macra is delighted to be supporting women in sport by teaming up with the 20x20 initiative; “If she can’t see it she can’t be it.” It was fantastic to see so many entries into the poc fada from the ladies in Macra. We spoke to Christine O’Neill about her sporting background and the importance of promoting women in sport.

Tell us a bit about your sporting background?

I’ve been playing camogie with Courceys Rovers since I was seven. GAA was very big in Ballinadee National School, so it was a natural progression to go along and play for the club. I have been involved in rowing with Kilmacsimon Swimming and Rowing Club from a young age. I have loved participating in Macra sports event in recent years – it’s great fun!

What/who inspires you to play sport?

The feel-good factor of playing sport inspires me to get involved, along with contributing to teams in the community. The girls I train with and the ones that have played in the club and county jerseys before me inspire me to do better and train harder.

With 20x20 promoting ladies sports, do you think we need to do more for woman in sport?

Yes, I do think we need to do more for women’s sport, but I also think we are making massive steps in the right direction.

Sponsorship of teams and athletes has increased, attendance at games has grown and female participation is also rising.

What advice would you give to women that are playing sports?

Enjoy it. Make as many friends as you can while playing. Reap the rewards – feel good, look good, play good factors. Like anything, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.
