Keen demand was seen across all qualities of calves in Granard Mart on Monday evening for its weanling sale, with farmers and exporters in attendance and keen to secure numbers.
A total of 364 calves went under the gavel, with 361 weanlings sold on the night.
Angus and Hereford-cross animals weighed in at approximately 300kg on average and sold from €4/kg upwards, generally between €4.20/kg and €4.60/kg, with some lighter animals above this.
Weanling bulls weighing 200kg to 300kg averaged €5.91/kg, with the top and bottom third averaging €6.77/kg and €5.10/kg respectively.
A total of 114 bull weanlings tipped the scales between 300kg and 400kg and sold to an average of €5.48/kg. This put an average 350kg bull at €1,918, though many calves exceeded this figure, rising to €6/kg and above.

Top call on a price-per-kilo basis in the bulls was a five-month-old Charolais-cross weighing 235kg selling for €1,960 (€8.34/kg).
In the heifer ring, 45 heifers between 200kg and 300kg sold to an average of €5.70/kg, a fall of 13c/kg on the week before, though the top third averaged €6.68/kg, up 6c/kg. Heifers between 300kg and 400kg averaged €5.36/kg, with the top and bottom third at €6.06/kg and €4.71/kg respectively.
