Cavan Mart held its weekly cattle sale on Friday morning, where there were 46 cattle on offer with a clearance rate of 100%.
The trade was strong for all cattle, with the tightened supply helping to boost the trade.
Many of the top-quality continental cows made between €3.40/kg and €3.70/kg.
Top price on the day went to a May 2013-born Limousin-cross cull cow that weighed 765kg and sold for €2,600 (€3.40/kg).
A June 2023-born Charolais-cross heifer weighing 520kg sold for €2,420 (€4.65/kg).
There were a few young Aberdeen Angus- and Hereford-cross weanling heifers on offer, with the majority of these making over €3.80/kg. A January 2025-born Hereford-cross weanling heifer out of a Friesian dam weighing 265kg sold for €1,140 (€4.30/kg).
Bullocks
Sample prices among the bullocks included a March 2023-born Aberdeen Angus bullock weighing 600kg selling for €2,440 (€4.07/kg).
Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal after the sale, mart manager David Reilly said: “There are going to be massive shortages with the supply of cattle going forward, especially with the amount of live exports leaving the country at the moment.”
