Mayo-Sligo Mart’s annual elite heifer sale is one of the mart’s main cattle sales of the year, with 2025 seeing 200 in-calf, maiden and weanling heifers on offer.
A small number of in-calf heifers were put forward this year, with maiden heifers totalling approximately 90.
Maiden heifers sold in the main from €2,400 to €3,000 or €4.60/kg to €6/kg, with some prices above and below this.
Colour and shape dictated price, with farmers sourcing breeding stock competing with in-calf heifer specialists for the top lots.
Maiden heifers from 400kg to 500kg averaged €6.41/kg, with a top of €11.33/kg, with heifers weighing 500kg to 600kg averaging €5.60/kg, with highs of €8.39/kg. Strong heifers, a mixture of in-calf and maiden lots from 600kg upward, averaged €5.01/kg, with tops of €5.70/kg on the night.
SCEP-eligible heifers were also available for farmers ahead of the impending deadline.
Leading price
The leading price in the maiden section was a roan-coloured Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 548kg that sold for €4,600 (€8.39/kg).
What really dictated the sale was the section of 90 weanling heifers.
A small number of plainer or lighter heifer weanlings sold below the €2,000 mark and, even at this, heifers were achieving prices above €5/kg.
Top-end weanling heifers suited for breeding or fatstock classes were sold at prices in excess of €7/kg with ease.
Weanling heifers from 200kg to 300kg averaged €7.05/kg, with the highest being €9.53/kg, while weanlings from 300kg to 400kg averaged €6.98/kg to a high of €12.18/kg.
