A December 2024-born Belgian Blue bull took top price as he sold for €3,600 at Kanturk Mart’s special weanling show and sale on Tuesday last.
Selling for €8/kg, the 450kg bull was one of a number of exceptional Belgian Blue-crosses on offer.
The mart has seen a growth in numbers of dairy-cross stock at the expense of suckler weanlings since the advent of dairy expansion, but quality stock were still present.
Most well-muscled U-grade potential bull weanlings weighing around 300kg were selling for between €5.60/kg and €6.20/kg. The top end of the heifer trade hit into this price territory too.
Dairy-cross runners have performed well at the Cork venue through the summer and prices from €1,000 to €1,200 were got for most Angus- and Hereford-crosses across bulls and heifers. Some Friesian bulls weren’t too far off those either.
Speaking after the sale, manager Colette O’Connell said: “Trade was very lively at the ringside and has been for a while. There’s more online buyers, especially from Mayo and Galway in recent weeks. Usually we’d have them from Leinster, so this is new ground. Every week in July and August, we had 200 to 250 runners every week and that’s what’s drawing those new buyers in.”
