The suck calf ring was on fire in Carrigallen Mart on Saturday with one calf selling for a whopping €1,900.
That calf was an exception though as she was a Limousin-cross roan heifer calf from a Shorthorn cow.
"Calves remain an exceptional trade with numbers still holding strong. There is plenty of buyers in both farmers and some very active shippers," said mart manager Helen Kells.
This Limousin-cross heifer calf born 06/05/26, sold for €1,900.
Angus and Hereford-cross calves continue to make up the bulk of calves on offer with buyers very keen for well-bred Angus-cross bull calves.
The general run of these calves sold from €350/head up to €600/head for the heavier calves.
"There was a good show of the continental breeds with Belgian Blue-cross calves one-month-old selling from €500 up to €600. We had serious demand for the Limousin-cross calves from both farmers and shippers – most of them sold from €500 upwards, with a handful of Charolais-cross calves selling from €500 up to €700," said Kells.
"There was a number of runners of all breeds and they sold from €700 upwards. We had good farmer demand for those with Belgian Blue-cross heifers sought after," Kells said.
