Ballinalsoe Mart’s general cattle sale on Wednesday last saw phenomenal demand for store bullocks. These were present in good numbers, with just shy of 40% of all cattle on offer being bullocks weighing 400-600kg. Bullocks at 400-500kg were the real talking point, averaging €4.65/kg across 86 lots, up from €3.78/kg the week previous. The top and bottom third of bullocks of this weight averaged €5.15/kg and €4.10/kg respectively. More forward types 500-600kg averaged €4.07/kg for just over 90 lots, up 6c/kg on the week previous.
Finished type bullocks over 600kg were more plentiful in number, with 59 lots averaging €3.81/kg, back 6c/kg on the week previous. However, the top third of bullocks achieved a healthy average of €4.13/kg, up 8c/kg on the week previous.
In the heifer ring, prices were up for the majority of stock. Light heifers 350-400kg averaged €4.17/kg, while mid weight stores 400-500kg averaged €3.90/kg, up 7c/kg in the week. More forward store type s500-600kg averaged just shy of €4/kg at €3.96/kg, with the top and bottom thirds averaging €4.52/kg and €3.38/kg respectively.
Finished beef heifers over 600kg averaged €3.93/kg, up a strong 16c/kg in the week. With €4.23/kg and €3.63/kg of an average paid out for the top and bottom third of heifers of this weight.
