There was a flying trade for in-calf heifers at a special offering of 28 lots in Tuam Mart on Monday, with prices averaging just shy of €5,000/head.

The heifers on offer were mainly Limousin-cross, with a handful of Belgian Blue and Charolais-crosses.

The heifers were all due to calve in October and November and due to sires including Loyal (LM4184), Powerful Proper (LM7416), Elderberry Galahad (EBY), Erebos (LM6172), Grenache (LM4351) and a couple to the farm’s stock bull who is a son of Ewdendale Ivor (LM2014).

The average price recorded was €4,931. The highest prices were generally paid for large-framed, heavier heifers.

Three lots exceeded the €6,000 mark, selling to a top of €6,450, with two of these heifers weighing 750kg and the other 720kg.

The general run of prices ranged from €4,300 to €5,250/head with heifers here weighing in the main from 600kg to 680kg. There was only one heifer selling below €4,000/head, at €3,600, with this heifer also the only one weighing less than 600kg.

The lowest price heifer, at €3,600 (€6.05/kg), was this Charolais-cross heifer weighing 595kg, born 07/01/23 and due in-calf to LM7416 on 14 October.

Weighing 680kg, This Limousin-cross heifer born 27/03/2023 and due to calve on 16 November to the farm’s stock bull sold for €5,650 (€8.31/kg).

This March 2023-born blue-grey-coloured Limousin-cross heifer weighing 720kg and due to LM4184 on 20 October sold for €6,300 (€8.75/kg).

Weighing 750kg this Limousin-cross heifer born 21/01/23 and due on 12 October to LM4351 sold for €6,450 (€8.60/kg).

This 635kg Belgian Blue-cross heifer born 16/05/23 and due on 7 October to EBY sold for €5,250 (€8.27/kg).

The mart will hold a sale of 80 in-calf heifers on Friday 17 October 2025 at 7.30pm on behalf of Norman Connolly. The heifers traded under the banner of ‘premium in-calf heifers’ include 60 lots calving from November to December and 20 from January to March and include what are described as show-quality animals.
