Moocall hopes to develop products that use modern mobile technology, to improve farm productivity. When one of Moocall’s founders, Niall Austin lost a heifer and her calf due to a difficult calving back in 2010, the idea for Moocall was born. Niall had a theory that a device that measured tail movement might be able to predict the onset of calving and brought the idea to the other Moocall founders Michael Stanley and Emmet Savage.
As they looked into the issue, it became obvious that there were far too many avoidable losses with cows and calves during the calving process. The team believed that this high mortality rate could be reduced by using technology to monitor labour and trigger an alert prior to calving occurring in order to inform the farmer that they should be present at the birth to assist if needed, thus greatly improving both the cow and calf’s chance of surviving.
The first Moocall product, the Moocall calving sensor was launched at the National Ploughing Championships in 2014 and became commercially available in January 2015. Since then over 25,000 sensors have been sold in over 40 different countries worldwide and the Moocall team are continually trying to spread Moocall to new markets.
Moocall have added to their range when they released a free herd management software, called Breedmanager, a mobile app. They also released a newer version of their calving sensor a new non-slip red rubber which is easier to attach.
In September 2017 Moocall announced their third product, Moocall HEAT – which is collar worn by a bull. It works by creating a radio link from an ear tag in each cow to the collar worn by the bull.
Moo Call also has been nominated for and won numerous awards both in Ireland and around the world.
