Tractor companies are now increasingly fitting specific keys for individual tractors but, on many farms with existing tractors, the generic keys are still being used.
These generic keys are widely available and are not a deterrent to tractor theft. Vapormatic, suppliers of tractor and machinery parts, offers a vehicle immobiliser that can be fitted to any make of tractor from about 1997 when tractors began to be fitted with Engine Control Units (ECUs).
The kit, code named VLC5501 in the Vapormatic parts catalogue, uses a keypad system to immobilise the tractor when not in use, even if the keys are left in the ignition.
The keypad uses wireless encoding technology and can accept up to six unique personal identification number (PIN) codes for five users and a master user. Each code is four to six digits in length and is unique to that tractor driver.
The keypad has LED status indicators and backlighting to ensure clear visibility even in the dark. It comes with a keypad override disc for total control and emergency mobilisation of the tractor.
Fitting the keypad is a straightforward job for an experienced agricultural engineer, according to Vapormatic. The keypad only has two wires, it connects to an ignition live and a good chassis earth. There is no setting up required. All you will need to do is enter your unique PIN code to get started and full instructions are provided.
The cost of the unit is about €600 including VAT (€487.52, plus VAT) from farm machinery dealers around the country.
