A total of 68 farms incorporating 3,251 acres were offered for sale in Kerry last year. This represents a slight drop of 4.5% when compared to the 3,406 acres that were offered in 2014. Among the bigger farms were a 103-acre residential farm situated at Castlequin, Cahersiveen, and a 123-acre non-residential farm at Banemore, Listowel, both of which were withdrawn at auction, while a 246-acre golf course situated at Beaufort was brought to the market by private treaty.

The average price paid for land last year in Kerry was €9,360 – up 4% on 2014 when the average was €9,000/acre.

Prices ranged from €4,000/acre for a 20-acre parcel that was bought for planting to a top of €15,000/acre for an attractive farm in the Firies region. Of the 16 farms that went to auction, seven sold under the hammer. Some of these included a 54-acre residential farm at Cloonlara, Firies, which sold for €13,500/acre; a 44.5-acre non-residential farm at Ballyhar made €14,800/acre; a 22.2-acre parcel near Listowel averaged €10,450/acre; a 68.3-acre non-residential farm at Ballybane, Firies, made €6,700/acre, while an 18-acre parcel at Barleymount, Killarney, sold for €8,800/acre. Traditionally, land in the Killarney region commanded a premium but it became clear that, as the year progressed, these top prices were not forthcoming.

Other prices included €8,000/acre for land close to Ballydavid; €10,000/acre for land near Lisselton; €7,000/acre for a 40-acre parcel with limited access and €12,500/acre for a non-residential parcel in the Beaufort area.

The average paid for parcels less than 40 acres was €9,200/acre, while the equivalent figure for those greater than 40 acres was €9,500/acre.
