It was a clean sweep for Martin Murphy at Westport Show – which had the best and worst of weather in one day – as he won two championships.

Murphy’s Black Beauty (Loughehoe Guy) went one better than last year’s reserve result to take the sport horse championship ahead of Dermot Gordon’s VDL Arkansas three-year-old.

Murphy is determined to breed along traditional lines, saying: “Her [Elusive Emir] foal is going to make a perfect traditional mare – the type we had more of 20 years ago. If we lose traditional breeding and agricultural shows, we’re losing two ways to sell Irish horses.”

Murphy’s second win came when his Welcome Emperor filly Fuerty Princess added the Irish Draught championship at Westport to her growing collection, with the reserve title going to 2014 all-Ireland champion, Eddie Murphy’s yearling (Inisfree The Holy Grail), last year’s Irish Draught colt foal final champion at Ballinasloe.

Dermot Gordon also scored a double of wins when the Ballina owner took both the champion and reserve young titles with his Munther two-year-old filly and Elusive Emir yearling, who had won the all-Ireland traditional foal final at Mountbellew last year for breeder Noel Sheridan.

Michael Sweeney’s Bunowen Grey Lass (Dunlaughan Troy) won the Connemara junior title with the reserve going to Jarlath Grogan’s Hillside Dancer.

For the supreme Connemara championship, it was Damien Gorham’s prolific homebred winner Doonhill Misty Dawn (Currachmore Cashel) who took the honours with Noel Noonan’s Lockinge Aconite in reserve.

Another homebred in the form of Jane Gibbons’ Mayfield Butterfly (Rolston Riverdance) won the supreme pony championship.
