JCB has smashed Britain’s fastest tractor speed with a modified Fastrac tractor.

The previous record was 87.27mph (140.44km/h) set by Top Gear’s Track-Tor in March 2018.

JCB reached 103.6mph (166.7km/h) with its modified tractor.

The location for the record-beating run was Elvington Airfield, near York, where the tractor was piloted by TV presenter and motor cycle racer Guy Martin.

Exactly 28 years to the day when the first production model rolled off the line, this record was set.

The record-breaking tractor is based around the Staffordshire-based firm’s standard tractor, powered by a 7.2-litre six-cylinder DieselMax engine produced in house in Derbyshire.

Capable of churning out a massive 1,000hp and 2,500Nm of torque, the machine has been lightened to an unconfirmed weight rumoured to be in the region of 5,000kg.

Along with transmission changes and enhanced aerodynamics, this, with the help of William Advanced Engineering, made the record possible.

JCB is no stranger to land speed records, having set the fastest land travelling speed for a diesel engine in 2006, which still stands today.

That record was broke using JCB’s very own DieselMax engines, recording a speed of 350.092mph (563.41km/h) on Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA using two of these engines in what was known as the JCB DieselMax Streamliner.
