Kate Derwin was crowned European Champion in the junior (under 18) division of the European Youth Show Jumping Championships at Zuidwolde in The Netherlands on Sunday.

Derwin partnered the Irish Sport Horse AHG Whiterock Cruise Down to victory. The pair jumped an impressive five clear rounds over the course of the championships, this also helped the Irish junior team win team bronze.

Harry Allen, who was also part of the bronze medal-winning team, jumped a double clear in the final round and claimed individual fifth place with Dancing Queen Z.

Derwin is no stranger to success on the European stage. She previously won team gold and individual silver at the European Pony (under 16) Championships in 2017 and in 2018 she was part of the Irish team who won team bronze at the same event.

Speaking after the victory Derwin explained how she was determined to come home with a medal having finished fourth individually at the championships last year.

“It was very close all week. My horse jumped phenomenal last year and this year he came out and gave it even more than he did last year and he really proved to be the best horse.”

Susan Fitzpatrick finished best of the Irish in 11th place with Fellow Castlefield in the individual Young Rider (under 21) European Championships. Jason Foley and Uncas S finished 12th.
