Kubota RTV900

Specification

The US-built Kubota RTV900 is unique in the UTV sector in that it is a very high-specification and well-built machine with lots of options. Cab options include open roll frame, windscreen and roof, full Kubota cab and Mauser cab option. The test version featured just roof and screen with a single wiper.

Transmission is borrowed from Kubota’s smaller tractors and is fully hydrostatic with three ranges and internal wet brakes. Hydraulic services are standard, with a single double-acting service used to tip the rear body. Quick-release couplings on the rear allow other implements or services to be plugged into the RTV900’s hydraulic system.

Driving

When driving, the RTV900 feels heavier and more sluggish than the other UTVs on test. It is ideal for work around the farm but lacks responsiveness where the terrain gets wet and boggy. This is caused by the combined function of the throttle/drive pedal, which increases engine rpm while also operating the hydrostatic transmission when pressed. These functions can be separated by the addition of a hand throttle to separate the functions and drive more like other hydrostatically driven machines.

Time trial

Despite the lack of balance between throttle and transmission function in muddy conditions, the Kubota still performed well, coming home in a time identical to the JCB and faster than the Kioti. The rear-leaf spring suspension handled the load well without losing too much ground clearance.
