Hourglass

If you have been eyeing up one of those oversized, shapeless coats that are dominating the high street at the moment, sadly that is the exact shape you should be avoiding. The best thing for the hourglass is anything tucked in at the waist with a V-shaped neckline.

For those that are narrower on top and wider around the hips, the very on-trend wrap coat is for you. Be warned, if done wrong this can look like a dressing gown. Make sure it’s fitted on the shoulders and sleeves. We’ve spotted lovely versions in Dunnes Stores and Mango.

Top heavy

In order to optimise your assets and get a coat that is most flattering to this shape, make sure that the top half has a V-neck. A coat with buttons or a zip to the chin will only make your chest look larger. Stay warm with a cosy scarf instead.

Tall and narrow

This may be the only figure that can pull off this season’s tricky oversized coat. Military coats are great for this shape too – there’s not many around this season, but if you get your hands on one they never go out of style. Buttons and pockets also add the illusion of curves.

Petite

When you’re short, it’s all about tricking the eye to think you’re that little bit taller. In this case, avoid long coats and choose something over the knee. A waist belt will also add length to the torso, while fur trimmings will add volume.
