Martin and Delia Canavan, along with their three children, Shane, Lorraine and Alan, own and run Moher Hill open farm and leisure park in Liscannor, Co Clare. Just a couple of minutes walk from the Cliffs of Moher, Moher Hill has survived Ireland’s worst ever economic downturn and each year looks to expand both the farm and offering of leisure activities.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Martin discusses his inventive career path. Beginning in 1976 with a herd of five dairy cows on 12 acres of land, Martin now keeps a flock of ewes and a small dairy herd for milking on his 200 acre enterprise, which is run in conjunction with Moher Hill open farm.
The scenery provided by the Cliffs of Moher and Liscannor Bay, along with a gap in the tourism market, inspired the Canavan family to open Moher Hill farm in June 2000.
“A lot went into setting up the business at that time and a lot has gone into it since then too,” says Martin. “We’re not sure that we would have survived without the Cliffs of Moher on our doorstep. However following 2012, the business made a slow but steady progression, with the help of the ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ tourism initiative and stay at home holiday trends.”

Despite Martin’s modesty, the business has proven successful with three recent FBD tourism and hospitality awards, an environmentally friendly award and their recently earned zoo license, which is a great source of pride for the Canavan family.
Spanning 14 acres, the farm ensures that children and adults alike have an opportunity to learn about and interact with their favourite animals in a safe and fun environment. Home to some of Ireland’s most beloved kid goats, who sometimes are donated to Bothar charity once reared, the Canavans ensure all their animals are well cared for. Donkeys, lambs and pigs as well as ‘Leroy’ the llama, ‘Andy’ the alpaca and ‘Ozzie’ the ostrich are just some of Moher Hill’s pampered residents.
From bouncing castles, go karts and a ball pool, to the all-weather outdoor play area and miniature golf course, fun is the center value of Moher Hill. One of the simpler, yet most fascinating attractions to the farm is bottle feeding and holding the young, every day with Martin.

The older animals are spoiled too as visitors get the opportunity to hand feed them. Some of Moher Hill’s more enchanted inhabitants are currently on holiday as the fairy trails are being reconstructed, but will be back very soon for all the visitors to explore.
With a small but strong team of eight, Moher Hill open farm continues to impress tourists from near and far.
“We have expanded our story here on Moher Hill farm every year and we will continue to do that,” Martin reflects, explaining that the team are already busy preparing for their upcoming annual spooky Halloween event.
