  • Dog Days. 10 August: Four dogs, 12 people and one story to unite them all. If you love nothing more than seeing some grade-A pooches on the big screen, Dog Days is the right choice for your trip to the cinema this week. This exciting flick comes from actor and comedian Ken Marino and follows a group of interconnected people in Los Angeles, who are brought together by some loveable dogs. Some people are pizza boys, others are baristas, but they are all united by their love of canines. Laughter, antics and heartwarming situations are sure to delight at this wacky and exciting movie starring Nina Dobrev, Vanessa Hudgens and Eva Longoria.

  • Súp.12 August: Get your jazz hands, fingers and toes at the ready for one of the Ireland’s most exciting jazz acts Súp, performing at The Workman’s Club in Dublin. The group was recently selected by RTÉ LyricFM to represent Ireland in the EBU Euroradio Jazz Competition, and was one of only four bands to make it to the final in Amsterdam. This doesn’t come as a surprise when you hear their smooth infusions of contemporary jazz, classical music and groove to form a new musical vocabulary. Admission to the show is €10, and it will begin at 8pm.

  • Brendan Grace. 9 Aug: Acclaimed Irish comedian Brendan Grace will be heading south to the Gleneagle Hotel in Co Kerry to perform some live comedy. Grace is known for his hilarious comedy shows and TV roles such as Fr Fintan Stack in Father Ted and Big Sean in Killinaskully. His laugh-out-loud routines are an essential late-night favourite for families across Ireland, so seeing him live is truly a wonderful opportunity for anybody who finds themselves in Killarney on 9 August.   • The Child is the Father of the Man. 8 to 11 August: Small-town gang culture is the main focus for this exciting new play from skilful storyteller Eamonn Colfer. Taking to the stage of the National Opera House in Co Wexford for just four days, you’d better be quick to ensure you don’t miss out. Starring James Freeney, Ben MacCaoilte and Martin Brennan, the show looks to be a huge success, as it follows in the footsteps of Colfer’s previous work, Master Storyteller Félim O’ Flaithulach, which was the subject of a rave review in The Wexford People.   • A Skull in Connemara. 14 August to 1 September: Pat Shortt takes on the role of an elusive gravedigger in A Skull in Connemara in the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. This play sees local gravedigger Mick Dowd get plagued with rumours about his involvement in the death of his wife seven years ago. Nosy neighbours, a troublesome teen and an ambitious garda lace the periphery of this dark comedy by award-winning writer and director of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. The cast includes other stars, such as Maria McDermottroe, Patrick Ryan and Jarlath Tivnan. Tickets are priced from €26 to €41 on www.ticketmaster.ie.
