New Holland continues to make inroads on the wheel loader market, particularly with the W170D model for silage pit work. Now, eager for a larger chunk of the market, the manufacturer has returned with a beefed-up version, which it feels will better challenge the JCB 435S.

At a recent press event in Germany, New Holland pulled the covers off its new W170D+ Forage Power model, a new machine purpose-built for silage pit work, and not just another construction model fitted with agri tyres and sent to work.

Unlike the construction sector, agility is a key trait looked for in a wheel loader destined for silage pit duties. The new W170D+ Forage Power derivative aims to offer this now that the 195Hp 6.7l FPT NEF engine of the standard W170D has been fettled with to churn out 30% more horsepower, at 255hp.

Torque has also increased noticeably from 950Nm to 1,300Nm, an overall increase of 37%. Engine service intervals have been stretched out to 1,000 hours, while fluid drains points are now easily accessed at the rear of the machine.

In order to better transfer the power to the ground, an extra gear has been added to the now six-speed 48km/h transmission. What’s more, torque lockup of the torque convertor is available from first gear, where instead it was previously only offered from second gear onwards. New models will include the same axles as found on W190D models. Aside from a newly designed boom joystick, there is now an option of joystick steering system, similar to that offered by JCB and other competitors.

A new boom joystick has also been fitted.

The heavier axles from the W190D are fitted to the W170D+ Forage Power.

The engine remains rear mounted over the rear axle, serving as a natural counterweight while keeping heat as far away from the cab as possible and leaving access easier for maintenance. The cooling pack has increased in response to the power increase, but the cube type setup remains and in such a way that none of the five radiators are sacked behind each other. A reverse fan is now fitted as standard. The longer boom is fitted as standard on Forage Power models where it is an option on the standard W170D.

Other Forage Power updates include an increase in diesel, from 250l to 350l, 180-degree rear view camera, and a 43,000 lumen LED light package and an optional fridge.

Fender design has also been tweaked to allow better clearance. In terms of styling, the new W170D+ Forage Power model fits into New Holland’s current styling programme.

The W170D+ Forage Power weighs 16.4t, leaving it more nimble and agile over the larger 19.7t W190D.

The entire Italian-built D series wheel loaders are now available in ‘D+’ specification. This brings about a higher level of safety and comfort features. Some of which include a premium seat, external seatbelt activation indicator, rear object detection, electric mirrors.

Joystick steering is now available on the W170D+ Forage Power.

W100D

At the event, New Holland also showcased its new W100D model, a model introduced to bridge the gap between the upper range of compact wheel loaders and the lower range of full-sized wheel loaders. It is positioned midway between current W80 and W110D, in terms of operating weight and tipping load. In terms of figures, the maximum operating weight of the W100D is 8,970kg, 50% more than the W80C. Meanwhile, the maximum tipping load is 6,500kg (full turn), 66% more than the W80C.

Underneath the bonnet is a 3.6l FPT NEF engine, which produces 112hp. It is married up to a two-speed hydrostatic transmission, available in 20km/h and 40km/h variants. Range changes can be made on the fly and either LSD or 100% locking differentials are available.

The new 9t model features a new cab with increased room and a larger windscreen. A raft of boom automation features is now available, along with an eco-mode and cruise control function.

Engine service intervals have increased to 1,000 hours and fluid drain points are centrally located at the rear counter weight.

The W100D has a maximum operating weight of 8,970kg and maximum tipping loaded (turned) of 6,500kg.
