Innishannon provided impressive display

Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally proved itself once again this year with an impressive display of steam and vintage machines on view at the Co Cork venue.

Christy Ahern from Ballinaboy, Ballinhassig, Cork drove his restored and working Nuffield 4/60 to the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally. The tractor is a 1961 model which Christy has restored since owning it for more than 20 years.

James Behan from Midleton has recently added this John Deere Model D tractor to his vintage tractor collection and he brought it out for display at the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally. The 1946 tractor was bought in Manitoba, Canada late last year and is in a very good original condition. James likes the tractor as it was one of the longest running production tractors ever produced by John Deere.

Ronan Horgan from Inniscarra had one of the biggest tractors at the show with this 1969 John Deere 4620 which he had imported from Canada. The tractor, complete with its original Henson cab, is a six cylinder unit that Ronan said is rated at 139hp. He has done some modifications and improvement work to the tractor and the restoration programme is work in progress.

Kiva and Kieran Kinsella on board Pat Kelly from Gorey’s Coleen Bawn 1900 Marshall Traction Engine at the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally. Pat bought the engine in 2012 and has been featured in the Journal in the past with his Field Marshall tractor range.

Healy brothers Michael (left) and Paul from Carrick-on-Suir, reversing their single cylinder tractors into place at the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally. The tractor on the left is a 1947 Field Marshall Series II Contractor model, while the other is a 1955 single cylinder Landini L25. Both tractors have been restored by the Healy’s as part of their single cylinder tractor collection.

Con O’Neill from Innishannon was early on the field at the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally with his 1963 David Brown 880 Implematic tractor that he has restored in recent years. Con bought the tractor in 1968 and it was 25 years stored in a shed, before he started to work on it. The engine and gearbox were untouched and most of the restoration work was to the lighter tinwork.

Jim Cotter from the Dungarvan, Co Waterford and part of the Silage Extravangza for Fethard, Co Tipeprary on Sunday, July 26, was on hand with his recently restored 1984 Ford 7610 tractor. The tractor originally worked on a Meath farm and has the H pattern gearbox and LP type low profile cab. The restoration work took Jim close to 16 months to complete to a very high standard.

Jim Connolly from Farnagow, Bandon always brings something interesting to the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally and this year was no exception. He had this Fordson Major modified unit, powered by a Ford 6 cylinder truck engine, matched to a Clark torque converter from a Chaseside loader and then feeding two Fordson Major gearboxes, one front and one rear to give 120hp an equal wheel articulated tractor.

Paddy Looby from Johnstown, Kilkenny, a well-known vintage tractor collector showed this 1949 Pampa single cylinder tractor that was built in Argentina. The tractor was modelled in the Land Bulldog and has a larger bore cylinder to allow it to produce 60hp. It is half way through a restoration programme, with some body work and painting yet to be done.

Arthur and Olive Flynn from Tralee, Co Kerry with Olive’s father William Mason’s 1901 Ransomes Simms & Jeffries steam engine. The engine has been in the family for many years.

Trevor Fleming from Castlemartyr, Cork has his restored 1948 Case 50 petrol tractor at the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally. He bought the tractor in Canada and has restored is for his vintage tractor collection.

Tom and Nora Linehan from Castlemanger, Mallow brought their 1974 Ursus C335 twin cylinder tractor to the Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally. The tractor was used by Tom in the 1970’s sold on and he recovered it again and restored it to its former glory.

Jim Connolly from Farngower, Bandon also had this recently acquired Ransome Cavalier combine harvester on show. Jim acquired the shed stored machine, which was originally sold by John O’Gorman & Sons of Athy in the 1960’s, then also a Ford tractor dealer. The combine is in working condition and has a 10ft header and four straw walkers that are ready for the 2015 harvest.

Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally proved a great success once again this year with an impressive display of steam and vintage machines at the Co Cork venue.

There were more than 50 steam engines in action, creating an atmosphere that was unequalled in the country, especially when they pumped up their smoke and sounded their horns in unison on the Sunday morning of the two-day event. Monday’s rain and wind created its challenges for the event.

There was plenty to see among the 300 or more tractor displays, with some new ones on show, adding to the enjoyment of the event.

The organising team deserves great credit for staging a wonderful event and for their unstinting efforts in raising over €1m for the Irish Cancer Society over the 18 years of the event.
