A trophy awarded to the best Aberdeen Angus in the region, the Munster provincial trophy, was again secured by Albert and Jennifer De Cogan, making it a massive six wins in a row.

Cheeklaw Jake Eric R535 was the successful recipient of the award, which was presented at the recent Dualla Show. This bull has won a number of top accolades this year, including the overall senior championship at the recent Tullamore National Show. Along with the breed championship at Dualla, Jake Eric also secured the interbreed title on the day.

Calf champions

Alongside the awarding of the provincial title, the Munster Aberdeen Angus Club also crowned its inaugural calf champions. This competition was launched earlier in the year by the club and was worked on a points system, with points accumulated at Midleton, Cork, Carbery, Dungarvan and Dualla shows.

The Mogeely herd was again out in front of the bull section of this competition, with Mogeely Black Catch. This September-born bull is sired by Mogeely Joe and out of imported cow Blelack Black Cap.

This bull secured a number of firsts at the qualifying shows before being crowned Munster junior bull of 2017. The duo also claimed the reserve spot in this division with Mogeely Memo.

Again September-born, Memo is no stranger to the show ring, having claimed the all-Ireland junior championship earlier in the summer at Newry.

Sired by Wall Royal Leo, he is out of last year’s provincial title winner Mogeely Miylo, and has won a number of championships this year with Memo at foot.

On to the females and it was again Cork breeders out in front – this time, however, Eustace and Deirdre Burke with Clontead Patriot S218. This stylish young heifer was born in September 2016 and is sired by Rawburn Boss Hogg N630.

Beef pairs

A regular attendee at summer shows throughout 2017, Patriot later joined up with pen mate Clontead Pamela to claim the interbreed beef pairs at Dualla show.

Following on to take reserve spot in the Munster heifer calf championship was Westellen Flora S809 from John and Kate Tait, Midleton, Co Cork. This young heifer calf is sired by Cheeklaw Eirwyn and is out of Rossiter Eric bred dam Luddenmore Flora J030.
