Dairy farmers were out in force at the recent Irish Angus Munster branch sale held in Kilmallock on Saturday 14 May, which saw a clearance rate of over 92%.

Altogether, 34 bulls found new homes, with an average sale price of €2,400.

Topping trade on the day was Killernan Master. This March 2015 bull was sired by Scottish AI sire Nightingale El Paso and changed hands at €3,500. Breeder of this five-star terminal bull was Martin Hehir, Killertnan, Milltown Malbay, Co Clare.

Next highest at €3,300 was Lemonfield MacGyver R002, brought out by first-time exhibitors Donogh and Jane McCarthy, Crecora, Co Limerick. MacGyver, who carries five stars for both terminal and replacement indices, is sired by Knockoneill Figo.

Next best at €3,000 was the day’s pre-sale show champion Ryan’s Luke. This September 2014-born bull was already after catching the eye of judge Michael O’Connor in the first class of the day before being tapped forward as his overall champion.

Bred by Ger Ryan of Ballyhooly, Co Cork, this one is sired by successful AI bull Bunlahy John G and goes back on a Luddenmore Fionn-sired cow.

Clinching the reserve championship was Denis Twomey’s 15-month-old Tubridmore Monarch. Sired by Friarstown Ideal Pete, Manarch boasts four stars for both replacement and terminal indices, but unfortunately failed to make his reserve on the day.

Other top prices included €2,800 for Ballycasey Larry, a Bohey Jasper son, from John Hayes, Ballycasey, Kildimo, Co Limerick.

Sunlodge Marty, a Cornamuckla Lord Hardy son, from Brendan McMahons herd in Ballysheedy, Co Limerick, made €2,750.

Back in at €2,700 was Martin Hehir, Milltown Malbay, Co Clare, with Killernan Mr T, a Nightingale El Paso son.

Next in at €2,700 was Lemonfield Lord Jenga, a Rathosheen Hugo son, from Donogh and Jane McCarthy’s Lemonfield Herd, Crecora, Co Limerick.

John Barlow saw his Goulding Jumbo King son Gurtavoher M474 sell to €2,700.

John Hayes saw his other Bohey Jasper son Ballycasey Liam sell for €2,600.

Also at €2,600 was Belrose Lightening, bred by Richard Forbes, Enniskeane, Co Cork, by Australian sire Lawson’s Romeo.
