Belgian Blue and Angus share top interbreed honours at Clonakilty show
The continental and traditional breeds split the top honours in the interbreed beef cattle championships held at Clonakilty show this Sunday. Edward Dudley reports.
No overall interbreed beef championship was awarded at Clonakilty show; instead, a top male and top female prizes were presented with fierce competition for both prizes across all of the major beef breeds.
The Stanley family from Knockbrown, Bandon, Co Cork claimed the interbreed beef female prize with their senior Belgian Blue heifer Knockbrown Holly. This senior heifer was born in September 2013 and is sired by the AI bull Harrison. This heifer was also the overall Belgian Blue breed champion at Bandon Show just last month.
The top championship in the interbreed male section went to Albert and Jennifer DeCogan, Killamuckey, Castlemartyr, Co Cork with their senior Aberdeen Angus stock bull Wedderlie BlackBox J935. This September 2009-born bull was imported from the UK and is sired by Abberton Mr. Bionic G441. This bull has won a plethora of championships in recent years including the male championship at the National Livestock show, Tullamore last August.

The overall interbreed pedigree calf championship was won by Peter O’ Connell, Mallow, Co Cork with his Simmental heifer calf, Raceview Gyspy Verona. This young heifer calf was born in September 2015 and is sired by the AI bull Anatrim Bodybuilder. This young calf beat out stiff competition from over twenty young calves of both sexes across all breeds.
